Blacksmithing Forge Proficiency Based Clearance

Most tools in the shop require clearance before independent use as a member. Each tool is different and most are expensive and/or delicate.

To gain clearance for independent use of the equipment, participants must be able to demonstrate to the satisfaction of the instructor that they can setup, operate, and cleanup:

  1. Safely, with consideration for both their safety and that of other users
  2. Carefully, without harming the equipment
  3. Cleanly, leaving the work area as clean as or cleaner than when they started

Personal Protective Equipment

  • Knows whether synthetic materials may be worn during use
  • Knows whether open-toed shoes may be worn at the forge
  • Knows whether safety glasses, apron, and hearing protection are required

Point out the following tool features

  • Maintenance Tag
  • Forge Open/Shut-off Valve
  • Ignition Button
  • Propane Open/Shut-off Valve
  • Propane PSI Gauge
  • Quench Tub
  • Tongs
  • Hammers
  • Pritchel/Hardie Holes
  • Horn
  • Cut-off Tool

Identify & mitigate common hazards

  • Hot flying debris - use appropriate tools, workholding, and clear work area
  • Fire/Gas Leak - stay vigilant (listen/smell test), use ignition button correctly
  • Toxic Fumes - avoid prohibited metals

Allowable Materials

  • Can name one common material that is safe for use at the forge
  • Can name two types of metal that are prohibited for use at the forge

Safe Setup/Operation/Cleanup

  • Demonstrates clearing the work area before use
  • Demonstrates use of ventilation fan and garage doors
  • Demonstrates proper PSI regulation
  • Demonstrates gas leak vigilance
  • Demonstrates proper ignition button timing
  • Demonstrates secure workholding of hot material
  • Demonstrates safe quenching techniques
  • Demonstrates safe shut down of forge
  • Demonstrates proper cleaning of anvil and table areas

Knowledge and Technique

  • Knows the likely reason for flames to sputter at the forge and what steps to take
  • Knows why natural materials critical for clothing and attire when using the forge
