Shop Techs' Problems & Suggestions

Shop Techs! Note problems with the program or your role on this page, and add suggestions that you feel might address them.

Ongoing Problems

If you see a problem with the Shop Tech program that isn't noted already, please add it to the following list. Comment on a problem with a child ordered list (as above, in the suggestions section); refer to a problem by its number in the list. Use Problem #0 as an example.

==== Problem #0: Brief Overview ====
A description of the problem.

=== Discussion ===

  - **(Name of Commenter #1)** Another comment from the first commenter.

=== Resolution ===
The resolution of this problem, if any.

Problem #1: Forgetfulness

We tend to forget things from class clearances if we don't have personal projects associated with them in the near future.

Problem #2: Not Knowing Other Shop Techs

We don't have many interactions with other Shop Techs unless we are often at Protohaven anyway without urgent tasks of our own.

Problem #3: Not Knowing Members

We don't know members on sight.

Problem #4: Transportation Is Hard

Some of us Shop Techs lack ways to get large materials to Protohaven.

Suggestions

Suggestions from Shop Techs or about the Shop Tech program not easily captured on the whiteboard or Discord may be added to this page to facilitate discussion. If possible, they should be related to problems identified above. Use the format below as a starting point for each suggestion:

===== Suggestion #0: The Thing You Suggest =====
A description of that thing you are suggesting. Mention the problems
listed above that it directly addresses, if any.

==== Discussion ====

     - **(Name of Responder #1)** A response to that comment.

==== Resolution ====

Suggestion #1: Shared Shop Tech Projects

As part of orientation, have each Shop Tech define a specific project or projects they want to complete in the next month, or quarter, or half-year. While all of us are together in a cohort or large subgroup, determine which clearances will be necessary, what materials will be required, what transport or storage will be needed at a high level. Encourage us to offer to assist each other and form per-project teams with a regular weekly meeting time here at Protohaven. Use this information to inform scheduling shop techs and organizing clearance classes.

Schedule a showcase of Shop Tech projects at the end of the half-year.

This helps address problems #1: Forgetfulness (by giving techs other people's projects to work on once they get a clearance) and #2: Not Knowing Other Shop Techs (by making techs valuable to each other immediately).

Suggestion #2: Shop Tech Calendar

Keep a whiteboard/magnetic calendar for the next six weeks permanently in the studio area with the Shop Tech schedule and any other Shop Tech events on it, including any the Shop Techs create informally, themselves. Individual Shop Techs' names should always be accompanied by their photos and/or their Discord profile pic.

This helps address problem #2: Not Knowing Other Shop Techs (by making techs visible to each other).

Suggestion #3: Shop Tech Shared Storage & Delivery

Allow Shop Techs optional access to shared monthly storage of some kind. Allow easy discovery of whom is ordering what from where so that Shop Techs can coordinate purchases and deliveries through a designated Discord channel. Designate a favored “man with a van” or similar delivery service and a weekly Shop Tech delivery time (delivered items going to the shared storage by default).

This helps address problem #4: Transportation is Hard.
